Help Information for the Pens List THIS PAGE TELLS HOW TO DO THINGS - This is the the second part of the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for the pens@zoss.com listserv, a free internet mailing list operated by Thomas Zoss for people interested in the hobby and business of fountain pen collecting.
GENERAL INFORMATION The pens list allows people to send a message to every subscriber by sending only one message. The computer distributes the same message to everyone via internet e-mail. There are now about 1800 subscribers to the list. This is a free list for pen collectors distributed by Tom Zoss (tzoss@zoss.com). TWO VERSIONS AVAILABLE REGULAR MODE - The "regular" mode distributes information message by message. For this subscription choice a message comes in, is approved, and immediately goes out to the subscriber list. Subscribers to the list in regular mode seem to enjoy the constant 24/7 flow of messages. Separate messages are easy to file, print, or delete. DIGEST MODE - Another version of the list is available that collects messages and sends them out in a "digest" or packet. The digest mode is a choice you can make when you subscribe. It distributes the same messages in collected digests rather than many separate messages. Digest subscribers often want to minimize clutter of their in-box. WHERE TO SEND A MESSAGE? If you are a subscriber and want to send a message to everyone on the list send it to: pens@zoss.com (all regular text messages go to this address. There is no separate address for the digest). NOTE: If at all possible please use "plain text" format for messages to the list. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE, UNSUBSCRIBE, OR SWITCH FROM ONE MODE TO THE OTHER The Zoss Pens List now uses EZMLM software. It is very easy to use because all commands are handled by using e-mail messages that you can send yourself. Commands are determined by the address you use, and all message contents are ignored. Please do not send command messages to the main list address. Instead, send your message to the correct command address. THE ADDRESS YOU USE IS ACTUALLY PART OF THE COMMAND: To subscribe to the list, send a message to: (your own e-mail address will be subscribed)
To remove your address from the list, just send a message as shown below: When you send the above command messages you will receive a confirmation message to that address. When you receive it, simply reply to it to complete the transaction. (this is the double opt-in step so strangers cannot subscribe someone else's address). HOW TO SWITCH FROM ONE MODE TO ANOTHER - First, send a message to unsubscribe from the mode you are receiving. Then, immediately send a second message to subscribe to the other mode.
What if you want to subscribe your home address but you're sitting at your office computer? To set up a subscription for an alternate address, for example "john@host.domain", just change the "at sign" in your address to a hyphen (with '=' instead of '@'):
Note that the confirmation message will go to the address where the subscription will go.
To stop a subscription for that remote address, mail: For the file that answers Frequently Answered Questions and a description of available commands, send a message to: For help and a description of available commands, send a message to: If you want to know if you are already subscribed at your address send a message to: If you need to get in touch with the human owner of this list please send a message to: Tom Zoss, the list moderator. If you are having a problem with messages, bounces, etc. please include a FORWARDED copy of that message with ALL HEADERS intact to make it easier to help you.
